“You aren’t Sally?”

The man that stood over Mickie was pale and spattered with freckles. His dark auburn hair contrasted starkly with his blanched face. He’d just turned the light on in the tiny shack, and now he gaped at a bewildered Mickie, looking just as perplexed as she figured she did.

Her head throbbed and her throat felt like sandpaper. Hunter sat propped up beside her. His hands were bound behind his back with thick rope and a dingy white gag was tied over his mouth. He was out cold, and a small thread of blood glistened on his temple.

“What the hell’s going on here?” Mickie croaked. She found her hands were also tied behind her back, but their captor hadn’t gagged her yet.

Their captor slid a chair across the slat board floor and straddled it. He crossed his arms and rested them atop the back, then propped his chin on them while he stared at her.

“The boss is gonna be pissed.” He sighed and closed his eyes. His face crinkled up, like he was thinking hard on this situation.

Mickie looked at her stepbrother, Hunter, and worried. What had this asshole done to him? And what had he done to her? She felt groggy and her head and shoulders ached like a rotten tooth.

As she stared at the guy, she realized this had to be a corrupt cop who was a part of the cocaine trafficking story she was working on for the Saint John’s Gazette. What would her editor in chief say if he could see her right now? He’d already been worried about the ticklish nature of this story, but he’d still wangled an undercover deal for Mickie. She’d been working as the police chief’s secretary, using an assumed name while she gathered information for her expose. Only the chief, and Hunter and his patrol partner, Sally Rollins, had known her real identity.

So someone had to have sold her out to the drug dealers, she thought, and the thought struck terror in her heart. For now, she tamped it down and tried to focus on getting herself and Hunter out of this situation.

Just as the guy stood up, Hunter awoke. He shook his head slowly, giving pained groans as his eyes fluttered open. When he focused on their captor, he went crazy in his bonds. Muffled shouts filtered through his gag.

Giving a cruel smile, the man walked over to Hunter. He was about Hunter’s size and similarly built, but his face, his eyes, had a frenetic look that made Mickie nervous.

He yanked the gag from Hunter’s mouth, and Hunter said, “Trent Farrow, you sonofabitch. When I get outta here, you’ll never walk straight again.”

Trent scoffed at the threat. “You ain’t getting out of here, Fayette. I’m gonna make sure of that.” Then he turned to Mickie, ran a spidery finger down her chin. “You and your pretty lady are gonna disappear forever.”

Hunter snarled and spit curses at the man. Using his shoulder, he managed to knock the man off balance and away from Mickie.
